Working with my client on a project to create an inviting and comfortable guest room for her home started me thinking about what the best amenities and appointments are for a guest room. How do you make guests feel as comfortable as possible? Ultimately, setting up a wonderful guest room comes down to anticipating needs and getting an idea of your guest’s likes and dislikes.
Some people are hostesses at heart and have a gift for making their guests feel comfortable. As an interior designer, I can tell you the difference is in the details. In your guest room, include fresh towels that smell good; a water pitcher with clean, crisp glasses and a well-placed box of tissues.
Create a warm, welcoming environment that allows visitors to retreat into their own space and include a variety of interesting books for guests to read, and if possible, a TV and Internet access.
In addition to small comforts, think about how you can set up the guest room to provide function to your guests, too. Have an empty place in the closet for them to hang their coats and clothes, and empty drawers in the dresser for them to store their day-to-day items.
Include a basket of toiletries or a jar of samples from the beauty counter.
Include soft and warm bedding in your interior design for guests to be comfortable. Provide them with blankets and pillows in a variety of shapes and sizes, from plush and fluffy to light and breezy. You may even want to include hypoallergenic options for those with sensitivities.
Although some guests don’t like eating in their rooms, take a note from luxurious hotels and add a little bit of chocolate for a nice touch.
Or, you can even go all out and print out a menu like a bed and breakfast, along with an itinerary of activities you have planned during their stay. With just a little bit of thought and planning you can make your guest’s stay a memorable one!
