I want to share with you one of my secret design tools. It is the color black. I know, that sounds like a rather simple idea but you would be surprised by how even a subtle touch of it shifts or grounds a design. Black is the “stop” color that causes you to pause, take a breath, and then lets your eye keep wandering.
It may be its neutrality that makes it such an effective tool. I find that if I insert a touch of black into certain rooms, the design just flows better. There is something about even just a touch of black that adds elegance. Black also plays well with others. It just seems to heighten the impact of other colors and makes them look better too. Now that is a good friend indeed.
Envision a nearly all white room. Now envision it with a dark or black cabinet, a white couch with a black pillow or a light table with a dark lamp. Black and dark items in mostly neutral spaces help pull a room together with hits of contrast. The contrast allows your eye to hit the pause button, which creates a sense of peace for the viewer.
The goal is to create a space where the colors harmonize, which doesn’t mean they match, but actually play off one another. Think of a lively conversation of colors. It adds interest, surprise, charm and engagement. It makes a room feel complete and satisfying.
Whether a large or small amount, the color black offers true impact. Give it a try!
