Using a visit with a friend as an excuse to explore nearby Pebble Beach, it made me reflect on what makes a place unique, intriguing or surprising and how one can just happen upon great design whether in nature and man-made.
For example, since my husband is a fisherman, I am always on the lookout for a new place for him to fish. On this adventure, my friend and I discovered a calm and scenic inlet called Stillwater Cove. It is aptly named.
Clearly the gulls know something as the still waters reveal ample fishing opportunities for the birds… and my husband. I came upon one fortunate fisherman with 3 enormous fish as his catch. The color of the fish on his hook fascinated me. Who can explain why a color might stop you in your tracks but the big red one here did. I couldn’t wait to share this spot with him.
As we wandered on we came upon an elegant picnic table situated on the sandy beach. Not a blanket but a fully set table with a tablecloth, elegant gold chairs, fluted champagne glasses, floral arrangements and place settings! And no one was there. Was it a wedding celebration, a surprise birthday party or just a stylish group celebrating the day? We’ll never know but the delight of their efforts charmed us both. We were tempted to partake but kept walking on.
Design is something that should be incorporated into everyday living to make it just that much better. Great design provides pleasure, satisfies, solves problems, calms, charms, and makes life easier and sometimes even bearable. I get so much pleasure from seeing design well done in the everyday. I feel so lucky to be living in my new community and the endless visual pleasures here, large and small.
