Several weeks back my husband and I attended a wonderful lecture at Carmel's local cultural venue - Sunset Center. Being newish to the Monterey area, we have been enjoying exploring what the area has to offer residents, not just the tourist. The lecture we attended was timely and entertaining. It was about the phenom of Downton Abbey with charming behind the scenes stories by none other than creator and scriptwriter Julian Fellowes niece Jessica Fellowes. A real insider to the incredibly popular Downton Abbey PBS TV series , she was fascinating, charming, humorous and dished the dirt on the set goings on. We were charmed!
Some of the highlights of her talk were answering important questions like "Why did Matthew have to die...he and Mary were so happy?" Carson really does love playing cricket and you'll never guess who Shirley MacLaine has a crush on...you will have to read Jessica's books for the tell all!
A bit about the Sunset Center. Apparently the dramatic gothic building began as a public school in 1926. At some more recent point in its history it was transformed into an intimate yet state-of-the-art performing arts center with fantastic acoustics that welcomes a diverse range of artists from music to comedy, classical to modern dance, as well as rock stars. While they appear to be large enough to draw in the big names, they also support community programming and arts education. A diverse line up of offerings indeed! On the local end, they present the Monterey Symphony, Carmel Music Society, Chamber Music Monterey Bay and the Carmel Bach Festival.
With several buildings on the property, they house the offices of the Arts Council for Monterey County, the Center for Photographic Art, the Forest Theatre Guild, Dancekids of Monterey Bay and the Yoga Center of Carmel. More local institutions to explore down the road!
Surrounding the 2 block property are gardens, a courtyard and more, that welcome wandering and relaxation.
Some of the upcoming events at Sunset Center include a favorite of mine, Smuin Ballet, as well as Jackson Brown, The Monterey Symphony, Peter Frampton, David Sedaris, Michael Feinstein, and globalFEST featuring world music. Pretty impressive for little Carmel. My new community is really growing on me.
