Carmel has so many varied cultural events to participate in. I was thrilled when I saw that my favorite dance company, Smuin Ballet, would be performing at the Sunset Center in Carmel. The contemporary ballet company is always entertaining and compelling, but this season, in particular, struck me as bold. They premiered a new ballet called Oasis. The theme of Oasis is water and how precious it is to our world.
First off, the choreography was stellar. It is not easy to make one see movement in new ways, especially the movement of water, but this piece did. The “water droplets” reflecting off the backdrop where mesmerizing as the dancers depicted both the calming and suddenly ferocious qualities of water. Told in several movements and couplings, it was joyous and lovely to behold.
Being a visual person, I was wholly engaged by the costumes and sets, the light and the music. As a designer I took special notice of the change in costume, color and pattern, and how that set the mood for each dance piece.
It is rare when so many things come together so beautifully and perfectly. It really is inspiring when so many talents can work together to create a singularly beautiful experience. From the
music, to the costumes, the choreography, the lighting, the dancing and dancers, and the sets, it was truly a success. I feel fortunate and pleased to have seen it.
