Surprisingly, being a San Francisco Bay Area native, I had never walked across the Golden Gate Bridge! I know! Hard to believe but it is true. I recently spent the day with my son exploring several San Francisco landmarks, including a majestic walk here and a lunch at The Beach Chalet. It really was the perfect day to walk the bridge. The fog was in, which is so San Francisco.
From every angle, there is a fantastic view. The islands of Tiburon and Belevdere, Angel Island, and Alcatraz are all visible either on the approach or as you walk over. Ships and sailboats are coming and going. People are walking and jogging toward Fort Point to watch surfers just under the bridge.
What struck me as I took it in is that there is something powerful about the bridge that I can't put my finger on. Some sort of power pulls you in. Perhaps it is the scale, the drama of the setting, its history, or its design. It is just grand. I can't stop looking at it.
It really vibrates with an energy. Great design can do that. Perhaps it is my reaction to something that is larger than life. It certainly is iconic. Every now and then, it is great to take the time to play tourist in your own town. You are among the true tourists and can experience your own city through their eyes for a day and enjoy their appreciation, which makes me appreciate my city even more. I find it is a great reminder to stop, every once in a while, and look at something with new eyes or explore somewhere right under you nose.
